The American gymnastics team has a reputation of missing the opening ceremony, according to NBC News. At a press conference in May, USA Gymnastics CEO Li Li Leung stated that team members are “discouraged” from attending because of the ceremony’s length, which can be physically taxing. Athletes should prepare to “be on their feet for nine hours,” according to Leung. She continued by saying that in the end, athletes are free to choose whether or not to participate in the ceremony.
