Boars Head extends their deli meat product recall to seven million pounds.
Due to a potential Listeria infection, Boars Head is expanding a prior recall and recalling additional deli meats. According to a Tuesday evening announcement from the Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the luncheon meat producer is adding almost 7 million more pounds of ready-to-eat beef and poultry items.
Boars Head recalled around 207,000 pounds of goods last Friday because they might have been contaminated with listeria. Boars Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst items manufactured in Virginia as well as other ready-to-eat deli products produced on the same line on the same day were included in the previous recall.
Seventy-one goods made between May 10 and July 29 are included in this new recall. Products include various kinds of sausage, frankfurters, bologna, and ham. The recall covers a number of Boar’s Head “Old Country” ham product variants.
The Maryland Department of Health collected a liverwurst sample that “tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes,” per the FSIS alert. Some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail establishments as well as meat meant for slicing at delis are being recalled.

The products were delivered to retail sites across the country, with some being transported to the Dominican Republic, Panama, Mexico, and the Cayman Islands. Their sell-by dates range from July 29, 2024, to October 17, 2024. The establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” is printed on the product labels of the goods that are sent to merchants inside the USDA mark of inspection.
A notice to customers on the Boar’s Head website dated July 30 states that the business voluntarily expanded the recall to include all products made at its facility in Jarrett, Virginia, out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, Boar’s Head stated that until further notice, they have “paused ready-eat-operations” at the location.

Regulators are worried because such goods might be found in store cases and freezers belonging to customers.
Any recalled products should be thrown away and not consumed by customers. You should either return these items to the store where you bought them or toss them away. In order to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination, customers who have purchased these products are also advised to carefully clean their refrigerators.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating with federal and state officials to look into a multistate outbreak of listeria monocytogenes infections that are connected to meats that are sliced at delis.
Thirteen states and thirty-four sick individuals have been identified as of Tuesday, according to the FSIS. The CDC’s map of states reporting infections shows that there have been no cases reported in Michigan thus far.
There have been two recorded deaths and 33 hospital admissions.
As per the last recall, individuals who were affected by the outbreak claimed to have consumed meats that they had sliced at deli counters, according to the CDC. They are collaborating with state and CDC officials as part of the current FSIS investigation.
Signs of an infection with listeria
According to the CDC, a listeria infection can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on the individual and the affected body part.
High temperature, excruciating headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are possible symptoms for healthy people.
Usually, two weeks after consuming listeria-contaminated food, symptoms appear. According to the CDC, however, they can also occur as late as 10 weeks after exposure or as early as the day of exposure.
