New documentaries reexamine Laci Peterson murder,20 years following Scott Peterson’s conviction.
Scott Peterson was found guilty of killing his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn baby twenty years ago, putting an end to a case that captivated the entire globe.
Despite his insistence on being innocent, Scott Peterson was found guilty of murder in 2004 and given the death penalty the following year. After his death sentence was reversed in 2020, he was given a new sentence of life in prison without the chance of release.
He was described by the prosecution as an adulterous who, on Christmas Eve 2002, threw his wife’s body into the Berkeley Marina in California, trying to hide the fact that she wasn’t there. Later, her body washed up on the strand.
The case has been the subject of multiple books, documentaries, and movies throughout the years. Docuseries on Netflix titled “American Murder: Laci Peterson” and Peacock titled “Face to Face with Scott Peterson” will once again explore a true crime case that has grown to be among the most noteworthy in American history.
Laci Peterson was a person.
On Christmas Eve 2002, five years after she and Scott Peterson were married, 27-year-old Laci vanished from their Modesto, California, home. At the time, she was eight months pregnant with their son, Conner.
According to a 2003 United Press International story, her mother Sharon Rocha was among the last individuals to talk with her. On December 23, 2002, at around 8:30 p.m., the two had a friendly conversation.
According to NBC Bay Area, Scott told neighbors he was going to play golf and that everything seemed OK when he left the house the morning she disappeared. Prosecutors, however, claim that he traveled approximately 90 miles to the Berkeley Marina rather than to the golf course. Scott told the cops he went to the marina on a little aluminum boat he had recently bought to go fishing.
Rocha claimed in the Netflix series teaser that her kid will be enamored with Scott.
During her first interview for a documentary, Rocha recalled Laci telling her all these things about Scott before they ever met. As her mother, I can still recall saying, “I hope he’s not filling her with crap.”
When Laci first met Scott, one woman in the trailer stated she was “giddy,” while another said Laci thought her husband “was who he presented himself to be.”
Four months after Laci disappeared, in April 2003, her unborn son’s body washed up on the coast of San Francisco Bay. In 2003, a pathologist testified that her head, forearms, and one foot were missing, and that her corpse was severely decomposed. The pathologist said that her abdomen had worn away and that there was no sign of childbirth. The pathologist concluded that the baby’s body had most likely broken loose just before their remains were found.
Scott Peterson was detained when?
In April 2003, Scott Peterson was taken into custody in the vicinity of San Diego, over a seven-hour trip from his Modesto residence. He had bleached his hair, according to NBC Bay Area, and when the police brought him into custody, he had a large amount of cash on him.
He entered a not guilty plea to two counts of murder during his arraignment.
He was taken into custody after Fresno massage therapist Amber Frey reported to the police that they had begun dating a month prior to Laci’s passing, but that he had informed her that his wife had already passed away.
Family members of Laci testified throughout the trial that Scott did not appear to be concerned about her absence. Her cousin Harvey Kemple related a story about how Scott had been upset at a BBQ over some burned chicken.
According to a 2004 San Francisco Chronicle article, Kemple said, “I saw more reaction out of him when he burned the god-damned chicken than when his wife went missing.”
Over the years, Scott has discussed the subject and consistently insisted on his innocence. According to what his lawyers have said, Laci was slain when she happened upon a burglar. He apologizes for his adultery in the upcoming Peacock series and says, “I didn’t kill my family.”
In a piece that People magazine published on Tuesday, the day before the Peacock series’ premiere, he declared, “It’s horrible.” “Being married and having sex outside of it made me a complete asshole.”
He adds that he wishes he could “show people what the truth is” and expresses remorse for not being able to testify during his trial.
