The 2002 film, written and produced by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, served as the basis for the revival. The animated series “Lilo & Stitch” centers on six-year-old Lilo and her elder sister Nani, who adopt a blue alien named Stitch and reside in Hawaii. Await the arrival of Stitch, the small, furry blue ball of mischief in Disney’s live-action adaptation of the Lilo & Stitch story.

Although there was not much Lilo & Stitch news at the major Walt Disney Pictures panel at the D23 fan event on Friday, it did feature the first look at animation for the CGI-powered Stitch of the upcoming picture, which is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp of Marcel the Shell With Shoes On fame.

CGI Lilo jumped onto the screen at the Anaheim, California convention center during the celebrations, which included first glances at the live-action Snow White, Tron: Ares, and Freaky Friday sequel Freakier Friday. That was the first look at the alien furball, which was later made public on social media, in the mostly live-action version of the 2002 animated Disney classic.

The movie, which stars Chris Sanders—who voiced Stitch in the first film—will hit theaters the following summer. Sanders will reprise his CGI portrayal of the character.

The animated Lilo & Stitch, written and directed by Sanders and Dean DeBlois, featured Lilo Pelekai, an orphaned Hawaiian girl raised by her older sister Nani following the loss of their parents. After meeting an enigmatic alien, Lilo adopts him as her new “dog” and calls him Stitch.

For the upcoming film, Maia Kealoha will portray Lilo in a live-action role, while Sydney Elizabeth Agudong plays Nani and Kaipo Dudoit plays David Kawena, Nani’s romantic interest.

Other former cast members from the original will now be included in various roles for the remake, such as Tia Carrere (who played the original Nani) and Amy Hill (who played the original Mrs. Hasagawa). Mrs. Kekoa is the new role that Carrere will play, and Tūtū is the new character that Hill will play.

Zach Galifianakis, Courtney B. Vance, and Billy Magnussen have also been confirmed for the cast.

The most recent in a long series of Disney animated films to receive a live-action remake is Lilo & Stitch. A new trailer for Snow White, starring Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and breakout star Rachel Zegler from West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as the Disney princess, was also unveiled at D23.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, Agatha All Along, Daredevil: Born Again, Moana 2, and Zootopia 2 were among the other films with sneak peaks.

Lilo & Stitch’s release date is still unknown, but two Disney projects without a name are scheduled to debut on May 23, 2025, and August 8, 2025, respectively, the following year. View the updated version of Lilo & Stitch’s Stitch above.
